Native Apps vs. Hybrid Apps – What Are the Pros and Cons?
Native apps are developed specifically for each platform and compiled accordingly. This allows them to run directly on the device with minimal abstraction layers, resulting in maximum performance and full access to all device features.
The downside of native apps lies mainly in the need to develop and maintain them separately for each platform. For example, Android apps won’t run on iOS or the web, and their code base typically cannot be reused.
Hybrid apps, on the other hand, are developed using technologies like React Native. This enables a single code base to be used across multiple platforms. In terms of usability and performance, native apps are no longer always superior. Modern hybrid apps no longer rely solely on WebView containers and increasingly have access to native UIs and APIs.As a result, for the vast majority of projects, this type of app is the right choice. Only in very specific cases is a truly “native” app still necessary.
Are Progressive Web Apps the Same as Hybrid Apps?
No. A Progressive Web App (PWA) is essentially a mobile website enhanced with a few specific features. In most cases, it cannot be used offline without limitations and typically cannot be published in app stores. Access to native device features is often significantly restricted.
Hybrid apps, by contrast, are developed similarly to native applications – with the key difference being that a single code base is used across multiple platforms. These apps can be distributed and installed just like any regular app through app stores.
Native App vs. Cross-Platform App – What Are the Development Costs?
The development effort for an app depends on several factors. It’s obvious that more features typically mean higher costs. But other aspects also play a role—such as whether standard solutions already exist for your idea or if a lot of custom development is needed.
If you're planning to have an app developed, it's important to define the scope and any special requirements as early as possible. Based on this, we can reference similar apps we've already developed and provide a reliable cost estimate.
